— An invitation to explore rum
Rum is a journey.
Come along.
We’re Steve and Jami. We explore the bottles, places, people, and cocktails that make rum worth getting curious about—without pretending we’ve got it all figured out.

The cocktail is the glue
One bottle. One idea. One useful discovery.
No expert theater.
01 / Our approach
Start Here
No rum expertise required.
Curious about rum but not sure where to begin? You’re in the right place.
Rum can seem complicated. Different islands, different styles, unfamiliar labels, and plenty of opinions about what’s supposedly best.
We’re here to explore it with you, one useful question at a time.
1.
Get your bearings
What makes rum, well, rum?
It all starts with sugarcane. But how that sugarcane is fermented, distilled, aged, and blended can produce remarkably different rums. We’ll help make sense of those differences without turning it into a chemistry class.
2.
Look beyond the label
A dark rum isn’t necessarily an old rum.
And a clear rum isn’t necessarily unaged. We’ll explore what bottle labels actually tell us, what they leave out, and how to ask better questions.
3.
Make the cocktail connection
What happens when rum goes into a drink?
Sometimes mixing brings out something you didn’t notice before. Sometimes a flavor disappears. We’ll explore those differences through approachable cocktails, using what we learn about each bottle.
Come explore with us.
You don’t need expensive bottles, a trained palate, or the right vocabulary.
And we can’t promise we’ll pronounce everything correctly on the first try, either.
Just bring your curiosity. We’ll figure things out together and have some laughs along the way.

02 / Explore Rum
Every good map
needs a starting point.
Rum starts with sugarcane. After that, things get interesting.
Different ingredients, stills, barrels, traditions, and people all help shape what’s in the glass.
Here’s how we’ll start making sense of it. No need to memorize everything, and there’s certainly no test at the end.
01 — Rum Basics
What exactly are we drinking?
Molasses or cane juice? Pot still or column still? Does darker mean older?
We’ll unpack the terminology, challenge common assumptions, and make bottle labels a little less mysterious.
02 — Places & People
There’s more to rum than the bottle.
We’ll begin with Jamaica and Barbados, exploring the people, distilleries, and traditions behind their rums.
And we’ll discover why even rums from the same island can be remarkably different.
03 — Bottle Stories
Every bottle gives us something to investigate.
Who made it? How was it produced? What does the label actually tell us?
We’ll separate the marketing from what we can verify, then explore what happens when we actually pour it.
04 — Home-Bar Choices
What deserves a place on your shelf?
An expensive bottle isn’t automatically the right bottle.
We’ll explore what works in cocktails, when a substitute makes sense, and whether spending more really gets you something you’ll appreciate.
THERE'S ALWAYS MORETO THE STORY.
03 / The cocktail connection
From bottle to glass.
A rum can tell us one story on its own and a different one in a cocktail.
Add citrus, sugar, ice, or a few other ingredients, and suddenly we have new questions worth asking.

Why the glass matters
Does the rum still show up?
Sometimes a flavor becomes easier to notice. Sometimes it disappears completely. And sometimes an everyday bottle works just as well as the expensive one.
We’ll mix, compare, and ask the useful questions: Did that bottle improve the drink? Was it necessary? And what would we actually use at home?
And yes, sometimes that means making the same Daiquiri three times. Strictly for research, of course.
04 / The people behind the pour
RumAtlas
with Steve & Jami
We’re two curious people exploring rum together. We want to know who made it, where it came from, why one bottle tastes so different from another, and what happens when we put it in a cocktail.
We’ll read, taste, compare, ask questions, and occasionally discover that we were confidently wrong about something.
That’s part of the fun.
We’re not here to pretend we have every answer. We’re here to learn, share what we discover, and hopefully have a few laughs along the way.
So pull up a chair. There’s always room for another curious person at the table.
